Bought this for £15, R.R.P is £50!

Brilliantly written, for example, 'Hamilton's usual zeal for a healthy appetite of kerbs resulted in floor damage'. Really good

Why were my ancestors illiterate idiots. Thousands of years ago their were passing a sign which said "honey, wine, good soil, warm weather" and they stubbornly continued to north. Those who could read ended up to Hungary. It is now -14 C or 6.8 F outside. Tomorrow it will be -19 C and on Thursday -21 C Image When Phil was admiring winter sun glowing on Kimi's Lotus in Valencia, I was thinking, oh yes, that sun which hardly bothers to climb over the horizon. It doesn't warm up anything here and this is the southern coast of Finland Image

I went outside to pump up a bicycle tyre yesterday in a short sleeve shirt (was about 2c). A tad on the chilly side.

It is not the cold which kills, well, maybe if you are wearing only a t-shirt, but humidity and wind. Human can tolerate quite a chill weather with proper clothing and if the air is dry. When I was doing my military service at late 70s, we were somewhere middle of nowhere in the forest near Kuusamo, learning some survival and commando skill at the middle of winter, when the temperature was almost -40C, and it didn't feel so cold. We were living in a tent like this:
Image
Except it was white, well, almost white. It has room for about nine men and a stove at the middle of tent to give warmth. The problem is that if there are more than five men sleeping in the tent, the only way to do it, is to sleep with your feet towards the stove. Then your feet are burning and head is freezing - not really very nice. After the first night we had enough, and some of us had an idea to build a lean-to shelter:

Two of those opposite of each other with a rakovalkea which litterally means "slit bonfire" in between them:
Image
It would have room for whole of our squad. We had been strictly forbid to take any branch from trees unless they had fallen down. Nevertheless they had not forbid us to cut down trees, so we just chopped down couple of spruces and the problem was solved. We put snow all around and over the lean-to shelters and the slit bonfire burns really long, so it was quite comfortable and no-one of our squad slept in the tent after the second night. Other squads of our platoon thought we were crazy, but soon they were asking if we do have room for some of them too.

Mostly it was kind of boring, but being on the night watch was quite interesting. The guard post was couple hundred meters away from the camp, and there was absolutely nothing moving in the forest. No other lights that stars on the sky and most spectacular northern lights. For a day I was also counting traffic of a near by road, which was simple: "One" and that was it. Most exciting thing what happened in the camp was when somebody forgot canned liver paste too close to the camp fire. After a while we heard a sound like farting and the can spread it's content over somebody's backpack. Living in a forest can be dangerous  We did attack to the "enemy" camp where rest of our troops we living in cozy warm houses. They didn't think we would be dumb enough to attack them in freezing cold night, and they were totally taken by surprise. They couldn't catch any of us and they newer could find us either. Maybe they just gave up and hurried back to their warm houses.

At the end of day six our commanding officer came to tell us that the practice was ended prematurely because of the temperature had fallen below -40C. We were little surprised because none of us were suffering for the weather. No-one got even frost bites or anything. We were told to pack our things and leave. Our CO saw the shelter and cut down trees, but he was just smiling. Maybe he thought we had learned enough survival skills

I have been freezing much more when guarding military barracks in the town. The wind was blowing humid air from open sea and temperature was only -6C. Yet I got frost bites to cheek and felt really cold.

One might think that Finns are well prepared to winter, but that is not true. Every year winter takes us by surprise like anyone else. Trains and buses have been late and there has been pile-ups on the roads and about 40 injured people has been taken to hospitals.

There has been in the news that weather has been very cold around Europe, even -30C in Rome. In Britain lots of snow and something like -10C. I hope there has not been any fatal accidents. And people put your hat on and cover your ears when going out :<>:

The thing is, media in Britain portrays this attitude that it is only our country that cannot deal with snow, when in fact much of Europe struggles as well..

I find it worse on a day when it is 10c and raining than 0c and sunny. Much warmer today than other days

Well, here there are some common Finns, who laughs when they hear problem with snow elsewhere in Europe: "OMG, little snow and they are in trouble". Usually they are older people who also say: "When I was a kid, I had to ski 50 km to school, and kill wolfs on the way, you youngsters just have it so easy". In reality, it has today been snowing all day, and snowploughs are too busy to clean all the snow away.

I would be happy for -1 to -5C and little snow on the ground, but to be honest :<>: when I was young even the weather was better Image

Yes, as is -16 or -14 or anything. With my many many many years of experience it takes few days to get used to cold. It is now -23C here but it does not feel as bad as did -14C few days ago. But I can't believe I did go out without a hat when I was in high school no matter how cold the weather was. Now when much wiser Image I wouldn't be so stupid again. Even some says intelligence and hair does not flourish on the same head, I probably have just frozen my head and therefore my hair is becoming thin

No matter what the weather or temperature is, but I got to share this. How many of you watch American Idol? I blame Irish for distilling that wonderful *peep* nectar (only one or two drinks) for me watching the show. There was somebody with a wonderful voice and he got a ticket to Hollywood. Later there was a guy who said: "This is the first day of the revolution. I am the revolution". When the judges said no because of terrible singing, he started begging to get to next round. And when he left he said: "The revolution does not end here". I think I have to stop enjoying that Irish nectar and change to milk or water or something :(

What a relief. Now there is a Dudesons show "Duudsonit tuli taloon" in English something like "Dudesons visited a home". In this episode they are teaching ROCK ATTITUDE to a all girl band Sarka. I must say Sarka's music sounds much better than Dudeson's. And they also look better :)
Can't find a video of them, but now they look really happy. Anyway here is a video of mini dudesons. This is how the madness starts:
