RÄIKKÖNEN'S JOURNEY GOES ACROSS THE AIR
20.07.2010 19:10

Image

They were shouting after the air-control when Kimi Räikkönen got to the Citroën's steering wheel in Middle-Finland.

Räikkönen really let his car sing in Tuesday's tests. A bunch of people had arrived to see when Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström where flying the test road back and forth.

There was as much air under the bumps as the skiijumpers have. Räikkönen got into a driving ecstacy when the road became more familiar and you couldn't make the difference whether it was Loeb or Räikkönen sitting in the car. His driving was that secure and fast.

There wasn't much media on the spot because the test was secured for the team and driver so they could prepare for next week's Neste Oil Rally. Räikkönen was all the time in a good mood and chatted with his huge bunch of pals while the mechanics were working on the car for a long time.

Part from the good feeling they were also looking for the right setups of the chassis by changing springs.

The Junior team's other driver Daniel Sordo will drive his own tests at the end of the week.

I don't know, the whole town turns into a party-zone so Kimi probably hangs out with his buddies (they are all there) in some VIP-area

But hey, Dindi and I won't forgive you if you don't take pictures of Kimi's adorable nephews Tiitus and Justus :<>:

They are too adorable

VM (paper edition)
Without pacenotes?

It is good to question the obvious from time to time. Hence my question: why are pacenotes 'a must'? Co-drivers are surely needed as big brothers who take care of the drivers and schedules - I totally agree - but is the compilation of pacenotes really and truly necessay? Why can't rally be driven by eyesight, like all the other forms of motorsport?

The World Rally Cars are of course expensive and there is always the risk of an off, but isn't it the whole idea of rallying that the driver knows how to adjust his speed according to his abilities and the existing conditions.

Think about it. Quite many of us have our own 'co-drivers' in our civilian cars commenting on our performance - but real men do not listen to any notes, do they...

When Jyväskylä was driven for the first time 60 years ago, the role of the co-driver was to act as a navigator. Even nowadays in Finland there are a lot of so called blind rallies, where the co-driver's most important job is to be a second pair of eyes for the driver, give directions from the road book and to remind the driver of the worst 'caution' places.

Pacenotes started to appear in rallies in the early 1970's when practising had reached ridiculous proportions and people wanted to get rid of it. Stig Blomqvist and Björn Waldegård came all the way from Sweden in April to drive through the Jyväskylä stages. Drivers had to know the special stages by heart if they wanted to succeed.

Should we go back a century when it comes to notes and recce, would it be easier for rookies like Kimi Räikkönen to reach the top? As it is now, Räikkönen's problem is first and foremost recce and learning all its intricacies. It will be a long-standing process before he will be at the same level as Sébastien Loeb, Mikko Hirvonen and co. in regards of pacenotes. And before that happens, it is pointless to expect that Räikkönen would be fast enough to challenge the greats of this sport.

Nevertheless, the answer is no. It would actually be even harder for Kimi. If recce was forbidden, their previous knowledge of the roads would give the old rally drivers an unreasonable advantage over the rookies. There would not be even the current amount of competitor turnover at the top (and currently everybody gets to drive through the stages twice before each WRC event).

What if a rally was driven on totally new roads every year? It could be possible to still find such roads. Secret practise sessions would most likely occur, as experiences from the national rallies demonstrate. But WRC-drivers could well be obligated to declare their whereabouts within the accuracy of a few hours throughout the year. That's what almost all the other top sportsmen have to do nowadays, due to the super strict doping control.

It is a different matter altogether should a guy with an on-board camera keep going 'round the stages', but who can guarantee this is not happening already? Rally cannot nor could it be allowed to be a prisoner of it's current format. There is a need for discussion and even some wild ideas, so that we can safeguard the future of our great national sport.
