If he is going to perform as consistent as he did in Monaco then he has a chance. But considering Monaco is not a proper track the weakness of the car cannot be seen there. Once Ferrari goes on traditional circuits like Canada, Silverstone & Germany then we can get a nice comparision.

Agreed that it's a drivers track and Massa drove well, but I feel that this result was achieved under special circumstances. The McLarens struggled, Lotus were off pace so I feel that he had luck on his side. The races ahead will show the true picture and I am pretty sure Ferrari has not turned on a Magic Switch to give a competitive car to Massa & so is the case with Massa himself. What Fernando is doing is truly exceptional from the same machinery. |

Massa was 5.2 seconds behind Alonso, 4.8 sec behind Vettel, 2 sec behind Hamilton 35.4 sec ahead of the train of di Resta where was also Hulkenberg, Räikkönen and Senna. So he wasn't so much out of pace when compared to Alonso, who could have pushed a little harder if necessary. It wasn't so exceptionally much better with the same hardware. It depends on how and to what you compare. Massa did very well; much better than before in this season.

People keep saying 'his pace has improved in recent races' but his pace hasn't been far off Alonso since China. It's mistakes, such as spinning in Canada and messing up qualifying then hitting a Toro Rosso in Germany, that have been the problem.

Sergio Perez looks the closest to take it. Though, I wouldn't write off Nico Hulkenberg. He's silently been focusing on the driving and is regarded by many as World Champion material. Di Resta for me is definitely not on the cards. I think he's destined to go to Mercedes once a seat opens up. I also think he fits well into the their corporate culture...

What about Heidfeld for a year? Sounds silly but id take him for a year. get him testing and slot him into the last race or 2 i say

He might not do badly for a year but I can't see Ferrari signing him. As much as I like him and would like to see that happen even as a number two.

No. Their reserve driver is... Davide Rigon.
Although that's only because Jules Bianchi is officially listed at Force India. He's still effectively Ferrari's reserve.

Hmmm if needed in the event of something happening to Alonso / Massa Bianchi might do ok. Was wondering if they'd learnt from 2009 when their options were crippled Schumacher or Badoer. |

If I had $20 to put on any driver, I'd put it on Kovalainen. Very impressive in a poor car for a 2 or 3 seasons now. He has the experience. He's stable and will perform consistently. Ferrari already have consistency in Massa - unfortunately that's consistently bad.
I expect Kovalainen to get a 1 year contract with an option for an extra year. (That option depending on Perez' development in 2013.)
2013 onwards will be the beginning of an Alonso-Perez partnership that will be tough to beat.
