This year, Ferrari had made a 1-2 in Hockenheim. In 2008, Hamilton was 1st, and Heikki 5th ( and Piquet 2nd ). Massa was on his way for the race win. Heikki, in 2008, not. Yes Heikki let Hamilton through, but he knows that he only slowed down Lewis, that's why he lets pass him. That's what happened with Alonso at Indy 2006 when he let past Fisi (!). For the drivers championship perspective, I fully understand Ferrari's order, but at least they could have made Massa's tyre stop a little bit longer to let pass Alonso . No one would complain then ^^

Team orders are illegal if it is for the lead. But remember Canada 2005 where Fisichella led the race. Alonso wanted to get pass, but couldn't. He came on the radio several times, complaining that Fisichella didn't let him through. The team told him to maintain position. Then he came on the radio again, saying: I did what you said! What more I have to do! Team told him: Fernando, we know you're faster, overtake him. And there he went. Into the lead. Eventually both cars retired. Fisichella sufferd an hydraulic failiour, Alonso hit the wall.

Quote: Asked what he would do if the same situation arose again on Sunday, Massa - who insisted after the race that it was his decision to let Alonso pass - simply responded by saying: "I will win." full article here: Code: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8868309.stm

Massa sounds deluded with such a statement...if Ferrari would radio him this comment in this race, whatis to stop them from doing so (albeit with more tact) in future races? Even when they lie, they can't do it convincingly.

I think one of the reasons it seemed more unacceptable was because of how obviously it was done. I think this was Massa's way of showing he really didn't want to cede the race to Alonso. I think it would still be met with a few raised eyebrows from everyone but if he have for instance just slowed enough to let Alonso get in his tow for the hairpin, it wouldn't have seemed so suspicious.

Famous quote from Enzo Ferrari himself.

I think it was a very callous gesture by Ferrari to tell Massa to move over. No matter who wins the race, the team still gets the same amount of points for a 1-2 finish, so if it was strictly the constructors' championship they were worried about, they wouldn't have said anything. Ferrari knows that Alonso is not very happy in the team because they're not delivering at the moment, so this was throwing a carrot to the horse in a sense; keeping Alonso happy for a little while longer. For Massa, this was the chance to prove to himself and to the world that he has fully come back after his accident last year, and Ferrari took that away from him. In my book, Massa did what he needed to do and it was admirable. As for Ferrari, it was disgraceful. As for Alonso, just plain selfish. He could have at least allowed Massa to cross the line alongside him in a formation finish.

"When Ferrari wins, our cars win. When Ferrari loses, our drivers lose." I guess that shows how deep that concept of how to run an F1 team runs within Ferrari. Personally, I hated the call. Racing is unpredictable, and Alonso should have had to find a way past Massa. There was enough traffic that it could have happened. I can understand Ferrari's opinion of how to run the sport and their team-and maybe in the last race of a season, with a title on the line (Brazil 2007) I can understand making such a move. But this was way too early in the season (even though it's halfway over) to do something like that, in my opinion. I also admit I am a Ferrari fan, but I can't agree with what they did last weekend.
